Regeneration has transformed this proud waterfront city in recent years into an upbeat, cosmopolitan, cultural melting-pot. Kingston-upon-Hull, home of the BEST WESTERN Willerby Manor Hotel, comes complete with a stunning marina that offers up an array of masts and waterside developments that provides a slightly continental feel and a reminder that Holland and Belgium are just a boatride away.
With the iconic Humber Bridge from the south intersecting the M62 from the west, transport links into Hull are good. Once you get there, you might not want to leave. Award-winning visitor attractions, a historic old town and a fascinating museums quarter combine to create a unique atmosphere that’s only improved by Hull’s excellent shopping and nightlife.
Hull’s foremost visitor attraction is The Deep, an oceanographic study centre housed in a stunning waterfront building designed by architect Sir Terry Farrell. At The Deep, a unique blend of interactive technology and stunning displays that includes over 3500 fish, you can see southern stingrays, moray eels and a collection of grey reef sharks that’s unique to the UK. Embedded within the attraction is the Two Rivers Restaurant, where diners can enjoy a Mediterranean menu surrounded by some of Europe’s best aquatic displays in the Twilight Zone and Endless Oceans exhibits.
Other key developments in Hull include the museums quarter, which comprises Wilberforce House, the Hull and East Riding Museum, Streetlife, the Ferens Art Gallery, the Maritime Museum, Hands on History and the Arctic Corsair trawler, where real trawlermen share their experiences on board the 1960s sidewinder trawler permanently berthed on the river.
Elsewhere, the BBC’s new regional broadcasting headquarters are now on the edge of Queen’s Gardens. For retail therapy, there’s a new, 40-acre shopping centre. The £200m St Stephen’s scheme was celebrated as one of the world’s best regeneration projects at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards 2008. An equally pleasant shopping experience awaits at Princes Quay, whose 70-plus shops on three decks sit alongside a multiplex cinema and range of restaurants.
